(b Suwalki, 11 Oct 1849; d Munich, 16 Feb 1915). Polish painter. In 1868-70 he studied at the Warsaw Drawing Class under Rafal Hadziewicz (1803-86), Aleksander Kaminski (1823-86) and Wojciech Gerson. In 1871 he enrolled at the Akademie in Dresden and in 1872 he travelled to Prague with his friend, the Czech painter V?clav Broz?k. In 1873 Kowalski went to Munich, where he studied for one year at the Akademie under Alexander Wagner (1838-1918) and then for a short time at J?zef Brandt's private studio. Kowalski's success in selling work in Munich persuaded him to settle there. In 1890 he was nominated Honorary Professor at the Akademie. On a visit to Poland c. 1897 he purchased an estate (Mikorzyn) near Konin, where he stayed during subsequent visits, making sketches for use in his paintings.
