(b Philadelphia, 25 March 1798; d Dorchester, MA, 8 Nov 1865). American printmaker and watercolourist. After training as an engraver with Francis Kearney (1785-1837) in Philadelphia (1815-19), he embarked in 1821 on a theatrical career, performing for five seasons with repertory companies in Philadelphia and Boston. From this experience came his most important early work, a series of etched and lithographed character portraits of notable American and British actors. In 1825 he settled permanently in Boston.
