Tiziano Vecelli

(Pieve di Cadore, Italy today, 1490-Venice, 1576) Italian Painter. He started his studies in the workshop of Giovanni Bellini. At eighteen years old he went into the school Giorgione. The poetic conception of his painting left a deep imprint on Titian, as is evident in all his works of youth, and especially in the enigmatic allegory Sacred Love and profane love, canvas with which enshrines as a master of female nude. It also reflects a natural talent in the landscape. Previously, it had collaborated with Giorgione in the realization of the frescoes on the facade of Fondaco dei Tedeschi and had made the Padua Miracles of St. Anthony for the Scuola del Santo. He became the most important painter in Venice and was appointed official painter of the Republic.

His best known and admired works at present are those of mythological and allegorical themes, but the artist began the brighter side of his career with a series of altarpieces with strong and contrasting colors and powerful figures such as The Assumption or Alterpiece Pesaro to Santa Maria dei Frari. They are works of strong composition showing great vitality. The same dynamic patterns are repeated in the mythological works of this period as Bacchanal or Bacchus and Ariadne. By then, Titian was also revealed as a great portraitist, establishing a new pattern: the protagonist is reproduced half a body, with visible and real hands , but with some idealized traits. Around 1530, he lost his wife, and his style turned to less dynamic compositions, and more brighter and complementary colors rather than contrasting. By then, the reputation of the painter reached all the European courts, this enabled him to receive orders from Carlos I of Spain and Francis I of France, monarchs who portrayed. For the Duke of Urbino painted the famous Venus of Urbino, a new sensuality in the art of Renaissance. In 1545-1546, he made a trip to Rome, which marked the starting point towards a new treatment based on color and long strokes, and touches that undo forms and give a slight and pleasing appearance to his paintings . Between 1548 and 1562 was claimed by Carlos I and then by his son Philip II, for who, in addition of portraits, he made some mythological paintings called by the painter poetry for their idyllic and distant nature. His latest documented work The Pietà of Venice, presents affinities with the manierism. His latest documented work The Pietà of Venice, presents affinities with the manierism. The greatness of Titian, his fame, which exerted great influence contrasted with his character as a miser man, who always complained of being poor despite the great fortune he had.
